Summer at Steerprop - An opportunity for hands-on sales experience

Tuomas, originally from Rauma and a third-year Business student at the University of Turku, spent last summer at Steerprop engaged in meaningful work that merged theoretical knowledge from his university studies with real hands-on experience in the sales department.

He applied for the summer job at Steerprop, expecting that work in such a fascinating and important Finnish industry would be both engaging and rewarding. Although he admits he didn’t know what to expect, he hoped for the chance to join in real and meaningful sales-related tasks. “And that has definitely been the case,” he says.

Tuomas had a positive impression of Steerprop as a genuinely Rauma-based company with a lot of professionality and expertise, and his experience during the summer confirmed that image.

Tuomas gained valuable hands-on sales experience during his summer traineeship at Steerprop.

Although Tuomas had some familiarity with the marine industry from previous jobs, propulsion was a completely new area for him. “Working in the marine industry has been very interesting,” he says.

Steerprop exceeded my expectations. I got to do even more meaningful and interesting things than I could have anticipated.

Tuomas’ daily tasks included working within the sales team, preparing quotations, and contributing to tool and infrastructure development. He very much valued not only the new colleagues and interesting tasks, but also learning new things, particularly about propulsion units and the sales process.

Tuomas felt warmly welcomed at Steerprop, describing the onboarding as thorough and the team as both trusting and supportive.

I felt that my ideas and work were valued, and I could be myself,  Tuomas says.

He quickly felt accepted and made many new friends. A highlight for him was the company’s well-being day, which gave everyone the chance to connect and get to know each other in a relaxed and fun setting.

During the summer, Tuomas also found many links between his studies and his work at Steerprop. “I was able to reflect on different pricing, cost, and marketing-related issues, which are also familiar from my studies. I also noticed many tasks around me that relate to topics I study, such as procurement, internal accounting and information systems,” he explains.

“I’ve been interested in the marine industry for quite some time, and this summer strengthened my interest in working and building a career in the industry in the future. Propulsion units are an essential part of shipbuilding and the marine industry,” Tuomas says.

Looking back, he is especially grateful to the people who made the summer so memorable. “I would like to thank all my colleagues from the summer for an unforgettable experience. It was truly enjoyable to work as part of the team, and I hope we will meet again,” he concludes.
