<p>The George W. Goethals will become the third rock installation vessel above 30,000 tonnes in the fleet of Jan De Nul. The heavy-duty vessel is designed primarily to work in the offshore energy sector, installing rock to protect cables on the seabed. To meet the demanding operational profile, the propulsion system must provide exceptional power and reliability&mdash;capable of propelling a vessel with a capacity of up to 37,000 tonnes&mdash;while also ensuring high efficiency during transit and precise maneuverability during installation operations.</p>

With ducted propellers measuring 3.6 meters in diameter, these units are designed to deliver exceptional thrust and reliability under demanding operating conditions. Considering Steerprop&rsquo;s robust dimensioning principles, they represent the largest ducted units ever produced by the company.The propulsion package will also include two <a href="https://bit.ly/4q1lbSy">Steerprop Tunnel Thrusters</a> and two <a href="https://bit.ly/48gLhKU">Steerprop Retractable Thrusters</a>, ensuring precise maneuverability and optimal performance across all operating profiles.</p>

<p><em>Icebreakers are essential for safe, year-round transport in some of the harshest marine environments. In the Arctic and other ice-covered seas, vessels must operate under extreme conditions where performance and reliability are critical.</em></p>

<p>Designing propulsion for ice-class vessels requires specialized expertise, as each region presents unique challenges. Supporting a Wide Range of Applications

<p><em>Finnish propulsion specialist Steerprop has been selected to deliver its new Next Generation of Contra-Rotating Propeller (CRP) azimuth propulsions to Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven GmbH, which is building a state-of-the-art research vessel for the German Aerospace Center (DLR).</em></p>

<p>The new vessel, measuring 48 meters in length and 11 meters in breadth, will serve as a floating laboratory for maritime research. Designed to study, test, and operate on different maritime energy systems under real-life operating conditions, the vessel will become a unique platform for advancing sustainable shipping solutions. It will primarily be used for research voyages lasting from one to several days in the North Sea and Baltic Sea, accommodating up to 20 people onboard.</p>

<p><strong>First delivery of Steerprop&rsquo;s Next Generation of CRP</strong></p>

<p>This order marks the first delivery of Steerprop&rsquo;s Next Generation of CRP technology, representing a major leap in propulsion efficiency. The scope includes two Steerprop 14 CRP LM units, each rated at 750 kW and designed to Ice Class 1A standards.</p>

<p>The new CRP design introduces pressure lubrication for smaller applications, likely making this vessel the first in the world to implement such a solution. Pressure lubrication minimizes mechanical losses, enabling&nbsp;mechanical efficiency up to 98.5% compared to the typical 95%, and enabling superior fuel economy and performance.</p>

<p><strong>R&amp;D-driven propulsion optimization</strong></p>

<p>Prior to the contract award, Steerprop conducted an extensive R&amp;D study to optimize the vessel&rsquo;s propulsion concept. Model tests with the design propulsors confirmed that the tailored solution would fully support the vessel&rsquo;s demanding mission profile.</p>

<p><strong>A floating laboratory for the maritime industry</strong></p>

<p>Beyond energy system trials, the research vessel will provide extensive measuring capabilities, including load, torque, thrust, and ice loads. This makes it not only a platform for DLR&rsquo;s work but also a valuable resource for Steerprop, other suppliers, and academic partners to conduct independent research.</p>

<p>The vessel&rsquo;s unique role as a fuel laboratory at sea aligns with the maritime industry&rsquo;s push toward decarbonization, providing vital data on energy efficiency, fuel performance, and operational impacts in real-world conditions.</p>

<p>The order for Steerprop was confirmed in March 2025. Construction will be carried out at Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven GmbH, with Steerprop delivering the propulsion units as part of its comprehensive scope of supply.</p>

<p>This collaboration underscores Steerprop&rsquo;s commitment to developing propulsion solutions that meet the efficiency and sustainability challenges of tomorrow&rsquo;s shipping industry.</p>

<p><em>Finnish propulsion expert Steerprop and Seaspan Shipyards have expanded their collaboration on Canada&rsquo;s next-generation polar icebreaker, reinforcing their commitment to performance, safety, and long-term value for the Canadian Coast Guard and the communities it serves.</em></p>

<p>Initially selected in late 2023 to supply two advanced ice-classed bow thrusters for the new flagship vessel, Steerprop will now also support the integration of the <a href="https://bit.ly/3Glv3EM">tunnel thruster</a> into the vessel, ensuring peak hydrodynamic performance, smoother coordination with the shipyard, and reduced lifecycle costs. Seaspan&rsquo;s heavy polar icebreaker is one of the most powerful vessels of its kind under development globally and will play a critical role in maintaining Canada&rsquo;s year-round Arctic presence.</p>

<p>Steerprop&rsquo;s thruster technology is already renowned in ice-class applications for its gridless design, allowing the units to operate without the protective grids typically used to shield against ice buildup. This innovation simplifies installation, increases efficiency, and lowers maintenance burdens&mdash;crucial factors for vessels operating in remote, harsh environments.</p>

<p>As part of the expanded collaboration, Steerprop and Seaspan have co-developed structural enhancements to the tunnel entrances&mdash;including customized roundings and tunnel extensions&mdash;to further improve flow characteristics and thruster effectiveness. Steerprop has now been entrusted with engineering and manufacturing this bespoke solution.</p>

<p>The advanced tunnel thrusters will be essential to the icebreaker&rsquo;s ability to carry out year-round missions in some of the world&rsquo;s most demanding waters&mdash;supporting emergency response, scientific research, and vital services for Arctic communities. In addition, their uniquely optimized hydrodynamic and technical design will enable prolonged, energy-efficient Dynamic Positioning (DP) operations, further enhancing the vessel&rsquo;s capability and operational endurance in harsh environments.</p>

<p>Steerprop&rsquo;s original delivery scope also includes a bridge control system and an offline oil filtering unit.</p>

<p class="article__lead-paragraph"><em>Finnish propulsion expert Steerprop has been selected to power the new Polarstern, Germany&rsquo;s next-generation polar research icebreaker, with a propulsion system designed to deliver exceptional reliability, minimal underwater noise, and long-term cost efficiency. The tailor-made solution supports the vessel&rsquo;s demanding scientific mission in fragile polar environments and ensures high performance through cutting-edge predictive maintenance and proven ice-class technology&mdash;now scaled for unprecedented capability. </em></p>

<p class="article__paragraph">TKMS will build the new Polarstern for the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) and has selected the Finnish propulsion specialist Steerprop to supply the azimuth propulsion system for the new Polarstern, Germany&rsquo;s next-generation polar research icebreaker. Steerprop&rsquo;s solution was chosen for its exceptional reliability, ultra-low underwater radiated noise (URN), and advanced predictive maintenance capabilities&mdash;all vital to the success of long-term, uninterrupted polar missions in fragile ecosystems. In addition to these technical features, Steerprop&rsquo;s unmatched propulsion expertise and proven ability to support complex, demanding vessel designs made it the clear choice. Steerprop&rsquo;s polar track record&mdash;with azimuth propulsors on every third icebreaker in service in the world and without a single major overhaul in more than 15 years, also gave TKMS and AWI the confidence they needed.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Due to enter service in 2030, the new Polarstern will operate for up to 310 days a year in the Arctic and Antarctic, requiring a propulsion solution that supports extreme endurance, energy efficiency, and acoustic sensitivity. Built to Ice Class PC2, the vessel will be powered by two Steerprop SP 160 PULL ARC azimuth propulsors, the largest mechanical units of their kind ever built, each delivering 9 MW of power through a 4.8-meter diameter propeller. The specifications require holding a steady 3 knots through multiyear ice of up to 1.8 metres thick with 20 % snow cover.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">While the SP 160 PULL ARC units represent a record in size, they are based on Steerprop&rsquo;s well-proven mechanical propulsor platform, used widely in the icebreaking fleet. The thrusters are engineered for harsh ice conditions, offering mechanical dependability with modern automation for precise control in both icebreaking and station-keeping operations.</p>

Meeting the most stringent URN requirements ever applied to a vessel of this class, the propulsors incorporate Steerprop&rsquo;s unique design, engineering, and manufacturing standards&mdash;including a noise-optimized gearbox design and an integrated permanent magnet propulsion motor. These integrated features reduce radiated noise at its source, making the system ideal for acoustic research and minimally invasive marine operations.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">Given the vessel&rsquo;s limited time in port and expected 30-year service life, predictive maintenance and reliability are central to mission success. <p class="article__paragraph">Steerprop&rsquo;s involvement goes beyond delivering the two main azimuth units. The company is also fully responsible for the hydrodynamic design of the vessel&rsquo;s center shaft line propeller&mdash;ensuring optimal integration and performance across the entire main propulsion system. By taking full ownership of how the vessel moves forward, Steerprop plays a key role in unifying the vessel&rsquo;s propulsion concept. While the centerline propeller will be manufactured by an external partner, it will be built entirely to Steerprop&rsquo;s specifications&mdash;reflecting confidence in the company&rsquo;s design expertise and system-level approach.</p>

<p class="article__paragraph">The new Polarstern will continue the research conducted by AWI&rsquo;s existing icebreaker, Polarstern. The state-of-the-art icebreaker will need the highest polar capabilities as it operates in some of the world&rsquo;s harshest and most remote waters in the Antarctic and the Arctic regions. The new Polarstern will serve as a floating laboratory, gathering vital data on climate change and marine ecosystems, and it will supply Neumayer Station III, Germany&rsquo;s research station in Antarctica.</p>

<p class="Heading2nonumbering">Victoria is the first vessel in Damen&rsquo;s new Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) Tug 3413 ICE design &mdash; a class purpose-built for Arctic operations. Designed to deliver consistent performance in ice-covered waters, the tug is equipped with two Steerprop SP 60 CRP ECO propulsors, each rated at 3,700 kW and certified to 1A Super ice class. These advanced propulsion units combine pushing and pulling propellers within a single system, delivering superior maneuverability, ice performance, and energy efficiency in both harsh ice conditions and open water.</p>

<p class="Heading2nonumbering">Located on the northern Gulf of Bothnia, the Port of Lule&aring; is Sweden&rsquo;s &ldquo;gateway to the Arctic.&rdquo; With increasing cargo traffic and occasional cruise ship visits, its operational requirements demand reliable, high-performance tugs capable of year-round service. The new Damen tug meets this challenge, designed to maintain 8 knots through 1.1 meter thick floe ice or 3 knots through 1.1 meter first-year level ice &mdash; a benchmark in Arctic harbor operations.</p>

<p class="Heading2nonumbering">Steerprop&rsquo;s CRP technology has long been proven in high ice-class offshore vessels and icebreakers worldwide. By using two smaller contra-rotating propellers instead of a single large one, the system minimizes rotational losses and improves propulsion efficiency. With optimized blade ratios, pitch, and rotational speed, Steerprop CRP ECO propulsors deliver a 10&ndash;17% improvement in net thrust. An enhanced lubrication concept further contributes to increased efficiency and long-term operational reliability.</p>

<p class="Heading2nonumbering">The ASD Tug 3413 ICE is engineered for versatility and performance, achieving a maximum speed of 14.1 knots and a bollard pull of 72.8 tonnes ahead and 68.5 tonnes astern. The 34-meter-long, 13-meter-wide tugs were built at Damen&rsquo;s Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam.</p>

<p class="Heading2nonumbering">With Victoria now in service, the project not only strengthens the operational capacity of Sweden&rsquo;s northernmost port but also confirms Steerprop&rsquo;s CRP ECO propulsors as a groundbreaking solution for the next generation of Arctic-capable tugboats.</p>

<p>The reliability of our propulsion units is essential. They are used on vessels involved in very critical operations, such as ice management, on icebreakers, oil platforms, wind farm maintenance vessels and cruise vessels, where any interruption can cause huge losses. To maximize the reliability of the propulsion units, our technical department needs to consider the challenging conditions in both open and icy waters in their calculations. For example, different kinds of load cases need to be considered and propulsor tooth contact patterns need to be designed to be ideal for every specific condition and situation.</p>

<p>To ensure lowest lifecycle costs, we have developed Steerprop Care, our condition monitoring service, which enables us to support our customers in their operations and ensure operational quality throughout the lifetime of the vessel. For example, by monitoring the life of the propulsor unit&rsquo;s power transmission line, unnecessary downtime and maintenance can be avoided and both time and money can be saved. Steerprop Care turns unplanned disturbances into planned service.</p>

<p>The maritime industry also presents new challenges. When customers ask eg. for larger propulsors, it calls for complex considerations when it comes to material properties and manufacturability. By working in close cooperation with the world&rsquo;s leading component manufacturers, we can meet these industry challenges. For example, cooperation with companies that specialize in gears has helped us to achieve the proper hardening depths for gear sets. In this way, we can shape the lower body and get even greater results in efficiency.</p>

As we are determined to create even more efficient propulsion systems for the market, we concentrate on optimizing the shape of underwater parts to minimize flow resistance and take greater advantages of the contra-rotating propellers. In our optimization studies, we use model tests and CFD calculations.</p>

<p>As part of our commitment to developing propulsion technology that improve overall efficiency, we have developed the contra-rotating propulsion (CRP) technology ECO product line. The whole propulsor is pressure lubricated to lower mechanical losses compared with the commonly used oil bath lubrication technology. To ensure the reliability of the propulsion units, they are subject to comprehensive factory tests where the functionality of the system is tested and verified.</p>

<p>Another big development is our Steerprop LM unit, which uses an integrated permanent magnet (PM) motor that offers much better efficiency compared to a traditional induction electric motor. Moreover, by replacing our upper gear with an LM motor, we get more room in the ship for other components and we can avoid upper gear excitations in the ship hull, which is especially important for cruise vessels.</p>
